Magento 1 extension installation guide

We have some ways to install the magento 1 extension on magento website. Today I will help you learn to install the magento 1 extension in two popular ways.

  1. How to install magento 1 extension via feature magento connect manager of magento in your admin page

In this case, you need to have an admin account with magento connect permission and a magento 1 extension package with magento connect package extension format. You need to ask magento extension provider about magento connect package extension format before try to install it. Because, I see that some providers don’t have this format for their extension. If it is a not magento connect package, you can follow second way.

Step 1: Backup your website from server by creating a snapshot if you have a VPS server. You also zip the source code and export mysql on your website to backup.

P/s: Someone often don’t do this step because he believes that there is no problem during the installation process. I think that you should do it if your website is live and there are many customer online on that. And it is better if you try to install the extension on dev website first.

Step 2: Login to admin page and disable cache, compilation your website.

Admin page -> System -> Cache management to disable cache:

Step 3: Now you can go the admin page -> System -> Magento connect -> Magento connect manager and login to magento connect manager with admin account.

And then, you can click “choose file” in direct package file upload session

Step 4: Return to the admin page – logout admin and login again – check the extension installed and your website again. If the website work fine, you can enable cache and compilation to finish installation process.

Tip:

– If it has issue with community isn’t installed in your website, you can connect your SSH, go to root folder of your website and run sudo ./mage mage-setup to install it.

– If there is an issue during installation, the magento website will be to maintenance mode

You can delete the maintenance flag file on your server to change to online mode

  • How to install magento 1 extension via FTP account

In this case, you need to have an admin account, FTP account ( or SFTP account ) and a magento 1 extension package. Normally, extension package is a zip file or tgz file. You need to ask the host provider to get the FTP account. It is better if you have the FTP account and the SSH account. However, some sharehosts don’t give you the SSH account. So if you have knowledge developer, you should use VPS server. You will have fully permission to do anything to upgrade and improve your website.

Step 3: You can use filezilla or phpstorm to connect to your hosting with the FTP account or SFTP account. Now, you can unzip the extension package on your computer and upload the files to the root folder of your website in the your hosting

Step 4: Return to the admin page – logout admin and login again – check the extension installed and your website again. If the website work fine, you can enable cache and compilation to finish installation process.

Tip: if you have the SSH account, you can upload the extension package zip file or tgz file to your hosting via FTP and then you can connect the SSH and unzip the extension package file. It is faster than unzip on your computer and upload them.
